Twitter has this feature and this has became a famous one as twitter folks can make sure they are following the right people by means of verified badges and Facebook in a similar manner has started enabling this for all famous celebrities and personalities.
Also Business with large mass audience has been marked as verified to make sure they are trusted one and people may rather have an easy idea whether to Like that particular page regardless of spam or duplicate pages.
Some of the public figures such as Barack Obama, Mark Zuckerberg, Selena Gomez have been marked as verified one with badges rolled out and can be seen after their Profile name and also can also view them during Facebook Graph Search.
